Reflections

My mother placed me in an educational institution when I was five, and I remained in one ever since! However, much learning is available away from organised set-ups. Sharing experiences is a wonderful human activity.

Lip service.

Except for kissing, lip service is of little practical utility, leaving out, of course, lip reading and speech.

But as far as lengthy promises of help are concerned, lip service is sometimes second to none.

The gift of the gab, as it is commonly known, helps to convey what sounds like commital parlance, which seems indispensable to many who share the limelight on the world stage. But when the lustre and the splendour of conference halls fades away, little substance remains. Opposing groups remain at each other’s throat.

A close look at final concluding multi-lateral statements produced at the end of seminars, meetings, conferences, etc. bring forth the truth of what lip service is all about. Sometimes leaders justify the time and expense spent on many conferences by the production of statements.

World problems would vanish in thin air if instead of lip service leaders come up with concrete solutions, that put the emphasis on the doing projects instead of on the talking aspects. The absurdity of the belief that a formula suitable to all participating parties in a conference is considered a crowning success is indeed a fallacy. Its value goes as far as a face-saving equation. It is not possible to have diametrically opposing and divergent aspirations by several participants concluded to the satisfaction of one and all, by simply producing a common acceptable formula. Remove the shrouded lip service and all goes back to square one.

Lip service is also very evident at the lower end of the spectrum, such as within circles of friends, within managers and subordinates, within churches, and within most groups. The challenge remains to transform lip service into generous service.

We can do it.
