Reflections

My mother placed me in an educational institution when I was five, and I remained in one ever since! However, much learning is available away from organised set-ups. Sharing experiences is a wonderful human activity.

Why not ?

The hen thought how brave it would be to hatch some of a serpent’s eggs. Though reptiles have never been very popular pets with hens, this heroine was adamant to go ahead with her plan.

She kept asking herself; “Why not ? ………Why not ? Why ……..not, I can’t do it ?”

In fact she did, and Aesop promptly illustrated vividly the unfortunate ending.

This is not the “why not” that others ask to their listeners. It is the often repeated question people put to themselves before attempting to come forward with a decision that will influence their own behaviour, prior to deciding on a controversial line of action.

In fact, it is a sort of a face-saving formula, a self-chosen question whose answer always imlpies a positive reply. In so doing it is, in a way, licensing those concerned to go ahead with their plans, whatever the consequences.

Some examples:
“Why not …………..I shouldn’t take part ?”
The brain replies: “Of course you can take part, just go ahead!”
“Why not…………..he/she shouldn’t date him or her?”
“Of course he/ she can date him or her! Text him/her rightaway. “
“Why not…………..I shouldn’t vote yes/no to the proposal ?”

Again the mind replies: “Sure you can vote anyway you want. Just do it.”
“Why not …………. I shouldn’t give her the longest kiss ever?”
“It is highly expected. Breathe in and go for it. You can also inform the book of records if needs be.”

These instances point to a very imprtant point to our daily behaviour. People often need self-assurance to carry out their objectives, their whims and fancies. In this format of questioning the inquisitor seeks self gratification. And, of course, a coverage is supplied to hide away all doubts and uncertainties. An auto-question is also safer because it avoids being told “I told you so” by the experts.

The hen was too quick to reply to her “why not ?” and faced the consequences. It is, therefore, wiser to keep out of the poultry coop, as much as possible.
