Reflections

My mother placed me in an educational institution when I was five, and I remained in one ever since! However, much learning is available away from organised set-ups. Sharing experiences is a wonderful human activity.

IN THE MOOD

An easier and a more polite way of saying “No, thank you, I do not want to...............” is perhaps: “I’m not in the mood
to................................”

This is indeed a commonplace jargon. Gives colour to saying. Heard repeatedly, sometimes ad nauseam. Backed with frustration. It’s because of the weather. A hide-out for other sentiments. Conditioning behaviour.

“I’m not in the mood,” whispered Henriette (with apologies to all the world-wide Henriettes) hiding her face between the sheets. The message was quite loud and clear. It left no doubts. Hubby could hardly hear the statement. To his chagrin he soon found out missing the connection.

“I’m not in the mood,” exclained the painter staring at his subject with dejected eyes. The pretty model dresses up and leaves the studio.

"I'm not in the mood," repeated Ms Braun. The usual hot cooked dinner had to be replaced by a third rate take-away. In other circumstances the hungry stomachs sitting at table would devour the excellent food prepared.

"I'm not in the mood," underlined the clerk sitting at his usual desk facing his colleagues. It was common practice for the rest of the staff to make up for others who were not concluding their share of the office burden on a particular day.

All very well to escape seeing to your commitment in full if it does not involve others. But to a legion of others like teachers, lecturers, judges, doctors, lawyers, and the like, "I'm not in the mood," is like refusing to carry on one's duty conscientiously. Which goes to explain that not performing to our best of ability is probably due to the "I'm not in the mood," syndrome.

Are there alternative solutions ? Very hard to know, unless subjects in the syndrome managed to discover face-saving solutions.
